Old friends, new friends
I had a good friend in Hong Kong named John Paul Pietrus, a very talented young photographer who worked with me on a bunch of fashion shoots. I think I gave him some of his first pro gigs (I was a magazine editor at the time) - shooting one of the Fendi sisters in the Mandarin Oriental, and doing a wild Vivienne Westwood shoot on the neon-bathed night streets of Wan Chai.
We lost touch, as one does. He emailed me the other day, having stumbled upon my site. Turns out he also found his way to London at some point over the intervening years, and has become a very reknowned fashion photographer. Check out his work here and here. John Paul's one of the nicest people I ever met, and it's made me extraordinarily happy to see him getting the recognition his talent deserves. Another of the Tribe makes good.
It's been a good week for friends old and new. Allow me to introduce the Croatian artist Alem Curin. We're working on a little project together. Here's a rather obvious hint:

As usual, clicky for bigger image. Alem is a genius, and not nearly as famous as he should be. I cannot wait to see what he does with my rather Absurdist script.
People like John Paul and Alem make me just happy to be alive and in the same universe as them.

The cat's meow

Because you can never have too many cute animal pictures: sketches of Agent Boo's feline sidekick, Pumpkin, by artist Edo Fuijkschot. Stay tuned for more details of Agent Boo; we're just nailing down schedules and release dates at the moment.
Meanwhile, back to Book 2 of Messiah Complex...

Caliban to the Audience
Forgive my silence. Of late, my fortune has been so good that it's almost killed me. I am Wanted. In Demand (for now; ask again next week). Four new graphic novel series judder towards their debut; film and TV work gains momentum almost daily. New projects are being planned with old friends. Add together what is now a full-time writing career with the ongoing necessity of part-time night work to pay the rent and a series of gigs as camera operator on indie film shoots, and you have a long line of excuses which basically translate to my barely getting enough sleep to retain hold of even my degraded version of sanity.
There will be changes here. This current state forces them. The days of long, philosophical contemplation on this blog are, sadly, in all likelihood finished. I'm sorry; I enjoyed it too. My weekly Ninth Art reviews are also hors de combat. More fundamentally, with two all-ages series coming out this year, I will have to excise several older blog entries not suitable for a PG-13 and under crowd. Most of Amphigory will be taken down at the end of January. If you haven't read The Love Junkyard and other stories, do so now, because barring a publisher stepping in with an offer to collect them (ha!), these are the last few weeks you will have access to them. I will also not be doing any more mixtapes, at least not released on a wide-open forum like this. They are, after all, technically illegal.
Yes, gentle reader, I am going to attempt to behave. At least in public. I have to; my dreams are threatening to come true and I must not - I will not - hit that self-destruct button that I love so much.
I shall be using this main blog for non-contentious things such as tales of bringing films and comics to life, and sneak previews thereof. It won't set the world on fire, but perhaps it will distract and amuse, at least for a little while.
Good behaviour most emphatically not being my natural state, I will continue to write friends-locked Livejournal posts in which my more R-rated and socially unacceptable adventures and opinions are aired. I may even continue the mixtapes there. If you wish to be a part of this, sign up to Livejournal (it's free) and friend me. Post a comment to my LJ stating who you are, something interesting about yourself and that you are over 18, and I will friend you back. Voila, access. Just don't expect me to read your LJ in return. I barely have time to keep up with close friends of many years standing. Or sleep.
