Radiobled, Or: The Fix Is In
So Martin's and my animatic didn't make the semifinals of the Aniboom / Radiohead contest. What did make it? Lots of finished videos, and a 60-second recut a guy did of footage from another, finished and commercially-distributed animation of his, in direct contravention of the contest's "must be new work" rule, among other rules.
Do excuse me, I'm having one of those teary "will my career ever go anywhere" moments. EDIT: It appears that another semifinalist, "16 tracks" is ALSO a recut of a pre-existing project. It's a shame, as I really liked this one... although I did wonder how they managed to shoot a project on film, do a DI, then do very advanced and lovely motion graphics in the extremely limited time the contest alloted for creating a storyboard. (Similarly, the Faust Arp video I link above, there were many, many comments under it during the voting period to the effect that people suspected it was a re-cut.)

I can totally sympathise.
I entered a chair design for the Premio Vico Magistretti furniture competition. The competition's subject was 'living simplicity in furniture design' and specified that entries were to be evocative of Magistretti's design style. So I spent ages researching his work to ensure my design fitted the criteria.
But it was all to no avail. The winning designs were a long way from Magistretti's ethos. They were either gimmicky, multi functional or conceptual juxtapositions. And one even broke the competions own rule that small accessories would not be accepted.
I've stopped entering competions now. They can't be trusted.

Hi Alex,
I guess you could say I followed your link from the forums but in actual fact it happened a bit of a different way around than that...
My sister occassionally reads your journal I think as you're linked from a friend of hers and she pointed me in your direction a few weeks ago when you first made a call out to animators. I did not get in touch as I already had a storyboard for mine and I wasn't sure that stylistically we'd gel so I left it be and carried on my way.
Now I've come back as having previously looked over your past entries to get an idea of who you are and what you do I've got a good idea that you're a pretty smart cookie and from what you've said on the forum I think we feel quite similarly about how the competition is being handled.
I am very keen to pursue these issues and set this right somehow. I think you do too so I guess I'm trying to make a further liason with you. If you want to get in touch with me my email address is beth a.t beth m a de th i s dot c odot uk
thanks,
Beth
