SMOKE #1 (of 3). MAY 2005. Diamond code MAR05 2962.
Alex de Campi (w), Igor Kordey (a), Len O'Grady (c). In a futuristic London run by a government both morally and financially bankrupt, ex-soldier Rupert Cain works for the government as an assassin, in exchange for his girlfriend and her father being kept safe from harm. But when the father is murdered anyway, Cain has to pick up the pieces of his shattered life and cope with everything he walked away from three years ago. Meanwhile, London descends into crisis as an unusual terrorist group kidnaps the visiting OPEC president and ransom him for quite peculiar demands. A violent, blackly comic thriller from top 20 artist Igor Kordey (X-MEN) and hot new writer Alex de Campi. Download a 10pg pdf preview . FC 48 pages, from IDW. Cover image after Banksy.

REVIEWS OF SMOKE #1: CBR : "This could well be the first breakout comic of the decade." The Fourth Rail's Randy Lander: 10/10 and Pick of the Week, "In reading Smoke , I was reminded of the work of Alan Moore... de Campi delivers the goods with an espionage/political thriller flavored with a healthy dose of social satire and plenty of beautiful violence, the latter courtesy of Igor Kordey." The Fourth Rail's Don MacPherson: 10/10 and Pick of the Week, "Smoke is a British Farenheit 9/11 crossed with The Bourne Supremacy . De Campi's commentary on economic manipulation and media lethargy pack a particularly powerful impact given the dominant state of right-wing politics in the world's last remaining super-power." ComiXfan's James Grove: 5/5, "Couple this return to peak form by Igor Kordey with a spectacular debut by Alex de Campi - who crafts together a complex and thought-provoking vision of a futuristic London beset by political intrigue, moral and financial bankruptcy, extreme and unusual acts of terrorism, and British espionage - and we have an introductory issue that excites me to the extent that a Warren Ellis or Alan Moore penned tale would do". Buzzscope's Rose Vess: A, "De Campi's tale is successful in its own right, with its rich characters, brisk pacing, and complicated storyline. It is billed as a "darkly comic" story and it is, but de Campi keeps a firm handle on the reins of her humor, never sacrificing the story for the cutting wit."

As his allies evaporate one by one, Cain is increasingly beset by questions about just whose side his mentor was on. Back in a London brought to a halt by the oil crisis, the only person who can answer those questions is being held hostage by terrorists. And as the government sees its plans unravelling, it calls in a little American help to remove the thorn in its side: No-Face, the Yankee deadly dandy. FC 48 pages.
